Outcome: Prepared and sent high school graduates in low-income Mexican-American community to best colleges in the country including Ivy League schools.
Outcome: Helped pass $133 million in bond issues for building new schools in low-income Mexican-American communities.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to engage the community in owning the work and creating intergenerational partnerships for student success.
Outcome: Brought two Pueblo and two Hispanic Land Grant communities together to build new high school that reflected all four cultures.
Outcome: Acoma Pueblo formed new Department of Education to give this Native American community direct control over the education of their children.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to cultivate courage and patience to overcome historical divides and work together across Pueblo and Hispanic jurisdictions and cultures.
Outcome: Engaged youth and adults in partnership to support a public middle school serving as a community center in a predominantly Latino community.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to use youth and adult partnerships to cultivate trust and align the values within a multi-service, community-based-organization with the community they serve.
Outcome: Surviving with generosity, tenacity, and resilience as a community-based-organization to provide vital support to an isolated, rural community with profound social, health, and economic problems.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How, in the midst of great community pain, to draw on collective gifts of deep hospitality and generosity, to support relationships with external groups that in turn support the community.
Outcome: Helped 100% of African American youth in a community leadership program graduate from high school and go to college in a community where the high school graduation rate is a little over 60%.
Outcome: Changed the culture of the Boys & Girls Club to incorporate youth and adult partnerships resulting in tripling participation and keeping youth engaged beyond their 18th birthday.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How African American men can support each other in stepping up to help youth succeed by holding high expectations and developing special personal relationships with youth.
Outcome: Formed a unique partnership across school districts to share education practices and policy approaches to strengthen the region’s K-12 education system.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to partner across small towns and generations in rural communities where isolation and independence are prominent.
Outcome: Moved Native American high school graduation rate from 18% to almost 50% in Minneapolis public schools.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to listen and develop partnerships within and across racial groups.
Outcome: Founded Nkusm Salish Language Revitalization Institute, a language immersion school, to promote culture and heritage as source of future success of Salish youth and their community.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to create Gracious Space where Native Americans and Whites can have difficult conversations and develop mutually respectful relationships.
Outcome: Formed intergenerational partnerships to cultivate next generation of Native American leaders who are stepping up to help community through such issues as safety and restorative justice.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to let go and allow leadership succession to take place in a culturally appropriate way in a Native American community-based- organization.
Outcome: Community members in Buffalo created unprecedented collaboration across racial and ethnic boundaries and between community-based organizations and the schools to attract $1.5 million in funding for after school programs.
Outcome: Your Voice, Your Choice campaign helped re-engage Buffalo voters who went to the polls in large numbers and elected an almost entirely new slate of school board members, including the first Latino elected to the Board.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to listen deeply to work across racial barriers and appropriately engage people of color in establishing agendas to address racial equity across issues.
Outcome: Trained over 2000 immigrants in urban community to "Know Your Rights" and develop deportation contingency plans to prevent the break up of families due to a parent being deported.
Outcome: Adopted circle process from Tagish Tlingit First Nation in Yukon to build trust between youth, adults and institutions and restore justice and health of community.
Collective Leadership Principle Learned: How to move from adversarial role with public systems (social services, police, courts, enforcement agencies, schools) to collaborating with them to achieve common goals.
