Since 1993, the African American Advocacy, Support-Services & Survival Institute (AmASSI Center) has provided healing to over 10,000 primarily African American and Latino men, women, and children in South Central Los Angeles neighborhoods. In recent years, the Center has expanded to other metropolitan areas. Much of the Center's success rests in its focus on cultural affirmation and crossing conventional boundaries. In this episode of CLEonair, we talk with founder Cleo Manago about why conventional approaches to community wellness have failed so many African American, Latino and other communities of color, and why the Center's holistic and culturally affirmaing approach works.
